Do large cats like Lions and Tigers purr like house Cats?

Sorry lily....YOU should get your facts straight....they do purr. I have worked in 2 zoos and have witnessed it myself..several of the big cats purred, especially the tigers. I have also heard bobcats purr in the wild

Reply:No. The bigger the sound, the less the purr. The bigger cats make a "rough" sound somewhat like a purr, but it is not a purr. A cheetah can purr, but it's roar is so tiny it sounds like a kitten.

Reply:no they ROAR. They are NOT able to "purr". However, they do make a similar sound to a purr when breathing. Big cats – lions, tigers, leopards, and jaguars – have tough cartilage that runs up the hyoid bone (in the throat) to the skull. The cartilage prevents purring, but gives these feline giants the ability to roar, where small cats cannot.








I think if all u people actually read up your facts u will see they don't "purr"








Im sorry birdgirl, but they don't. They make a noise similar to a purr when they are breathing in/out constantly, but it is not technally a "purr" the same as small cats. If u look it up in Walkers Carnivores of the world (leading working zoologist text book) u will see that I am correct. and bobcats are not classed as "big cats".
