Have Tigers always been bigger than Lions?

have they always been bigger, stronger than Lions?, cause I've heard of some extinct Lion sub-species, such as the Barbary Lion, the Cape Lion. Also the North American Lion, which existed thousands of years ago, like towards the end of the Ice Age, was bigger than todays African Lions, but was it bigger than todays Siberian Tigers?, I know today in the present Tigers are the biggest of all cats, but has it been that way throughout time?

The Barbary and Cape Lions were still smaller than tigers, and their sizes were exaggerated by Dutch and English settlers, who were the only witnesses to these extinct species.





Given the primacy of lion fossils and the fact that lions and tigers can still interbreed, it is at least possible that tigers evolved from lions, thus became bigger over time, and not smaller.
