Christians: Since Lions and Tigers can mate, are they separate species?

If so, then what's the definition of a species?

Christians: Since Lions and Tigers can mate, are they separate species?
Why is this question directed to Christians?
Reply:They can mate since they are both of the feline species. However, it is not common for them to mate. Most of God's creatures stick to their own genus when they mate. I wonder what the baby would be called? Liger or Tigon? Hmmm...
Reply:Yes! And the bible says not to breed white cattle to black cattle.

Reply:The problem with a lion and tiger mating is that the offspring is a mule...unable to produce offspring of their own.
Reply:they are both from the cat family

blessings :)
Reply:you are clueless, there is no cuch thing as interspecies breeding
Reply:they're both panthera, large cats. just like a wolf and a dog can mate. they're essentially the same animal. a species doesn't mean a different animal entirely.

a species can refer to similar animals within a genus or subgenus which have similar characteristics, and are able to mate with one another of the opposite sex.

so a lion and tiger belong to the same genus, and are therefore basically just different breeds of the same basic animal, hence the liger is a "crossbreed".
Reply:They are called ligers!
Reply:Haven't you seen Napoleon Dynomite?!? Ligers!
Reply:Yes, they're separate species.

Species are determined by the DNA being different.

Horses and donkeys are different species but they can mate.
Reply:They're both cats, so I'm guessing the offspring would look like both, but I had never heard of such thing.
Reply:No kidding. What the heck does this have to do with Christians? Get your facts straight.
Reply:Yes they are separate. Ligers and Tigons cannot always reproduce but I don't think they are a species because they don't mate in the wild.
Reply:Can their offspring have kids? If so, I guess it is not much more different than different breeds of dog mating. They are a lot alike.
Reply:what comes out of a lion and tiger mating? i have never heard of this...
Reply:Lions and Tigers can mate, yes. But their progeny is sterile. Therefore they are not able to produce viable offspring. Many separate species can mate, it is the ability to produce viable offspring that decides separation of species.
Reply:They are different species although of the same genus and family. However with that being said it's similar to the donkey+horse=mule. They can mate and procreate being the same genus and family however that resulting offspring will be unable to procreate, similar to the Liger.

Lion = Panthera leo

Tiger = Panthera tigris
Reply:That was entertaining :)
Reply:That was on Good Morning Amerrica a while back maybe couple months, they called it a Liger
Reply:i saw a tiger and lion fight once that's all i know I'm not qualified for such a tough question
