Are tigers dangerous animals?

Tabitha, the tiger at the San Fransico Zoo, killed one person and injured two. If a lion is hungry it might eat a person. Will a tiger do the samething? Is a tiger docile around humans? Are you allowed to pet tigers at a zoo (just curious)?

Are tigers dangerous animals?
Tigers are not docile little kitties. A tiger wold just as soon eat you as look at you. Tigers have killed thousands of humans in India over the years. More than any African lions have. Please don't pet the tigers.
Reply:No there just blood trirsty kittens that want some harmless deadly FUN!
Reply:I knew people were going to mention the SF tiger attack. Elephants and horses and dogs have killed people too. It doesn't mean that they are ALWAYS dangerous. It would like saying, "Oh, look that Ted Bundy killed a 100 people...hmm, humans are dangerous!"
Reply:wild big cats or domesicated are dangerous man and they can kill.
Reply:only if theyre not tamed they sholdnt do anything if theyre tamed :)
Reply:theyr'e pussycats. go and pet one
Reply:I don't think they let you pet tigers in the zoo and no matter how good they are trained they are wild animals it is not like a dog or a small cute cat.
Reply:Well yes, In fact all of the big cats are dangerous animals. Big teeth and claws. Its very easy for a tiger to kill a human. And tigers have been known to become maneaters in there home range, esp the Bengal. But this is usually rare. Captive tigers are usually well fed. And no tigers are not usuall docile around humans, unless it is a cub. Even tigers that grew up around humans can become dangerous is because they are wild animals, not domesticated.
Reply:Tigers are wild animals...ANY wild animal has the potential to be dangerous. NO, you cannot pet tigers at a zoo! And, ANY wild animal that is large enough and is a carnivore and is hungry enough may kill and eat a human.
Reply:Actually, her name was Tatiana. And all animals can be dangerous, humans are the most dangerous of all. It's when animals are forced to do something or live some way that is not natural to them that they can be more dangerous. A tiger taken from the wild to live in a zoo is likely to be more dangerous than one that was born and raised in capitivity. Tigers and other predators usually will only attack or eat people for one of three reasons:

1. They are hungry and people are easy prey.

2. They are curious and for them taking out bite out of something is like a person poking a finger at it.

3. They are agitated, either afraid or angry, and so are trying to protect themselves.

From what I have heard, Tatiana likely attacked those three me for reason 3. They were provoking her, teasing her, and got on her nerves.
Reply:Yes, a tiger will do the same thing if hungry. Tigers are wild animals an should be respected as such.

It depends on the zoo. I'm sure there are programs and opportunities for visitors to pet tigers - but under well-controlled circumstances and by properly trained handlers.. You'll have to check with your local zoo.
Reply:Where are you from?

There are very little differences between the large wild cats.

Any natural predator is going to act the way that Tiger did after being in captivity.

It isn't healthy for them.

And, no, you don't pet Tigers! They aren't house cats!
Reply:A wild animal is a wild animal no matter how/who it is raised by its still an unpredictable animal
Reply:You aren't honestly that ignorant, are you? the tiger in the San Fran zoo is a Siberian tiger, a climax predator. In their native environment, if it moves, they eat it. We're just at an undetermined position on their food chain. Their instincts say we're not only tasty, but easy to kill. But experience has taught them to fear and avoid us.

Are they dangerous? It would rip out your throat and feast on your flesh in a heartbeat. Just ask that dumb-*** who apparently taunted "Tabitha.". How high can a pissed off tiger jump? As high as it wants to.
Reply:pshh ya
Reply:tigers are top predators. They are not docile unless provoked as another poster stated. Their whole reason for being is to hunt and mate.
Reply:no they are not...i thing if u stand stiff n firm against a lion ...it will jus bak of...unless it really hungry...

but other then dat dey dont perfer us for a meal
Reply:Ask Tabitha she could tell you.
Reply:Tigers are wild creatures and are docile unless provoked. When some animals have been tortured or "picked at" for fun of people, after a while they tend to react back. Another way they can be provoked is if they thing you as prey or food. No you cannot pet a tiger unless it is trained and its trainer is near.
Reply:Give it space. You would want to eat someone if they constantly screamed and ran around your small cage.
Reply:You are not allowed to pet them at zoos. I think one of the big problems about the SF Zoo incident was that animals should not be kept in captivity. Their minds go crazy when they are in such small enclosures with only their necessities and nothing else. They are meant to be wild! I feel so bad about what happened to those people at the zoo and if animals weren't kept in zoos, this wouldn't have happened.
Reply:To a wild tiger, you look like a meal. Some have been tamed and are relatively safe to be around, however any animal will revert to it's natural defenses if threatened. And no, you are not allowed to pet tigers at the zoo.
Reply:yes
Reply:no there wild animals , no petting or ne thing else
Reply:thur fine just like lions

just don't piss em off
Reply:of course they CAN be dangerous, but that doesn't mean they are all the time. look at sigfreid and roy
Reply:probably,

i would most def. not pet one.
Reply:Of course they also can do that kind of thing.

They're animals right?

Animals can't tell which one they should do and do not.

Although there are some people that taking care of wild animals but I think it would be better for that animals to live in their natural habitat and socialize with their companion.
