Why can a lion mate with a tiger, and a cat can't mate with a lion.
What is the spesific scientefic reason.
( What are the rules ???)
Lion + Tiger / Lion + cat ???
chromosomes.
Lions and tigers just happen to have the same number of chromosomes. If the chromosomes can't match up, the egg will not be fertilized. Also, lions, tigers and leopards are all members of the genus Leo. They are "big cats". House cats, bobcats, lynxes and a number of other cats are members of the genus Felis. They are "small cats". The house cat has been mated with another species of small cat, resulting in a ringed coat pattern. These crosses have to be preformed by artificial insemination, because different species of cats are absolutely intolerant of each other. Lions will kill leopards if they catch them, because they concider them compeditors for food.
Reply:bcoz i think cat is a very distantly related subspecies when compared to tiger
Reply:Ligers are awesome! People are finally starting to learn about them.
Ok...about your question...size. Think about the size of the animals. A lion is like 10 times the scale of a normal house cat. Whereas a tiger is fairly close in size. I mean...maybe through invetro, but I dont know about the genetics.
Reply:Cus the cat wud get crushed.......... i love ligers they rock
Napolean Dynamite: Its only like my favorite animal ever
Reply:This is just a guess but I suspect it has something to do with the size of the respective reproductive equipment.
They are all in the cat/feline family so should be able to cross breed, but sizes would present problems.
